cold tangerines

just finished this book last nite. absolutely wonderful and life refreshing. i think it would be a wonderful summer treat for a close friend. put it on a friend's porch with a little tangerine, one with the leaves still attached. include a note telling her to enjoy and then pass on in the same manner. your friends will thank you! i am going to drop it off to my best friend this morning.

shauna niequist reminds us to celebrate life with every passing moment. i will leave you with this line in the first chapter. . . "I believe that this way of living, this focus on the present, the daily, the tangible, this intense concentration not on the news headlines but on the flowers growing in your own garden, the children growing in your own home, this way of living has the potential to open up the heavens, to yield a glittering handful of diamonds where a second ago there was coal." endless summer

so the time of year has come where i just leave the beach toys and towels in the trunk and don't give a thought to the sand granules that seem to invade every part of our life. i embrace it. the smell of sunscreen lifts my spirits better than any mood enhancer ever could. that is why i really love this gift. get a beach bucket and fill it with bubbles, shovels, sand toys, popcorn, frisbee whatever you think is fun -available here all ready for you, too! great gift for a summer birthday or a fun little surprise to have for your child, grandchild, nephew, niece, (actually i think my husband would even be into this gift) upon arrival at your next beach vacation.

old broken crayons to giftable crayons

look how fun and gorgeous these are. . .i saw this on a craft blog and thought we would give it a try. we have a birthday coming up and we have already ordered some playdough and lacing sealife shapes from my favorite MADE IN THE USA internet store, The Traveling Toystore, and we decided if we added one more thing it would be a perfect 3 year old gift! so my daughter and i peeled off all of the paper, broke the crayons into pieces and decided which color combos we wanted to use. (tip: we used a regular size muffin pan and it would be way better in a mini muffin pan, but i did not think this predicament warranted a trip to the store, so our crayons ended up a bit flat and big, instead of little and chubby) fill up the muffin pans as full as you want and then put it in the oven at 250F for about 10 minutes. take the pan out, let it cool a bit and then put it in the freezer. we used a non stick pan and the crayons popped out easily a few hours later. i am going to put them in a bit of mesh and tie with a ribbon and they will be brand new beautiful swirly crayons for our little friend, sammie bea. a fun and free gift!

heirloom crafty

this was just to good not to share. it brought back visions of my mom getting out her big 70s orange sewing box and when she opened the lid, there he would be-always sitting front and center as if he ran the place-the tomato pincushion. well apparently, you can make your own now. pincushions were once set on mantels in new homes to bring occupants prosperity. great gift for a new home or your little crafty friend. . . create it

blessed baby

When I came across this Baby Blessings Kit, I wondered where it was four years ago when all of my friends were having babies. I think that this is such a special thing to share with the mom to be. It includes 8 cards with ribbon to create garland and 8 bracelets to wear until the baby arrives. A very fun and meaningful activity to do for the baby at a shower. Create a beautiful keepsake by writing down your blessings for the baby. Everyone stays connected to each other by wearing baby shower bracelets until the baby is born.Suede bracelets with Ethiopian brass beads. Blessing Bracelets are worn until the baby arrives as a reminder to send the Mama-to-Be love and strength as she prepares for the miracle that is about to happen. Lovely colors blend with sweet floral patterns to create a decorative Blessing Garland for your birthing room or baby's nursery.

Let's Picnic

one of my all time favorite things to do is pack up the volvo and head to the beach for a warm summer nite's picnic on the sand. dinner tastes so much better when it is unpacked out of a lovely basket!
i think that a picnic basket is one of the best wedding or anniversary gifts that can be given, especially one that looks like this. it is the pioneer driftwood basket. seriously, could it be any cuter?? it is just so unique and simple, but yet has so much character. give it just as is or fill it with a great bottle of sauvignon blanc, sparkling water, crackers, tapenade, pringles, spam, whatever you think they might fancy. this one comes with a blanket and all the accessories.

pamper her

who does not adore a box to keep treasures in, especially this precious little paperdance treasure box, lovingly created by local santa barbara collage artist, gianna di girolamo. she hand picks special cigar boxes lined with handmade paper and accented with ribbons or other. . . long after the goodies inside have been enjoyed, the container will be a keepsake. this women's relaxation gift has been filled with wonderful soaps, a thai massage ball, relaxing candle and essential oil bath crystals.

dad's desk made brighter

this is such a special treat for dad. . .and very simple and easy on the pocketbook. buy a memo block or big stack of post it notes and let the little one go to town with the magic marker. when dad reaches to jot down his millionth reminder of the day, he won't be able to help himself from smiling. (great gift for moms, too, but since it is almost dad's day to shine, we will let him have this one)

good giving

this gift is so fun to give! kiva.org allows you to learn about entrepreneurs in developing countries on the site, choose someone to lend to, and then make a loan. by doing this you are helping a real person make great strides towards economic independence and improve life for themselves, their family, and their community. throughout the course of the loan (usually 6-12 months), you can receive email journal updates and track repayments. then, when you get your loan money back, you can relend to someone else in need.
so instead of throwing $20 into a money envelope for your nephew's graduation, give a gift certificate to kiva.org that has the possibility to literally change hundreds of lives. my brothers and i gave my mom this gift last mother's day and she loved it and is so excited to continue to re-loan the money to new entrepreneurs. . .

what brown bag?

so i admit that packing lunches is definitely not my favorite activity of the day. peanut butter sandwich, carrot sticks, apple slices, repeat. but, oh wow, if i had these beauties to pack everyday, it would be so much more exciting. love love love. great for any school aged child's birthday gift or first day of school treat. if you feel so inclined, fill each section with stickers, play jewelry, or some other little something that kids adore. long after the stickers are stuck to the walls, they will still be skippping off to school with their oh so cool little bento. . .

ok to monkey around

check these out!! i came across these jp monkey bags on a local blog, sbdigs.com. they are so cool and absolutely gorgeous (even way better than the photo shows). this woman owned company buys upholstery remnants (less trash) and makes them into these gorgeous bags to use grocery shopping, farmers marketing etc etc (once again less trash). every few months the fabrics change, as they run out of remnants and we will all wait in anticipation at what they will find next! i am super excited to be stocking them in my shop, santa barbara gift baskets as a gift bag option with a purpose! you can view their current bags available here.

hundred wishes

what would you do with a hundred wishes? i absolutely think this is one of the sweetest and most clever gifts ever. perfect for so many occasions. . .party favors or just a token of love to a special friend. the little card attached says "If I had a hundred wishes I would give them all to you". available here for purchase

here we go

where to start??? i have found so many amazing items that i am so excited to share. . .my hope is to inspire you to have fun giving. i love smart and sustainable gifts, not just another something to try to shove in the closet or toy chest or a trinket that will end up broken in a couple of weeks. my mom was all about keeping things. my daughter plays with toys i played with and wears clothes that i wore. in fact, here she is wearing one of my dresses. . . kind of a round about way to sneak a picture of her in, but she's so cute, right? anyways, gifts should be special, get lots of good use and be sustainable enough to be passed on or donated for someone else to enjoy. but , they also should be affordable, creative and unique at the same time. those are the kinds of gifts i like to give and those are the kinds of gifts i am going to share. let's be gifted in our giving!
